The Bible In Spiritual Christianity

Welcome to my journey as a spiritual Christian.

I have been exploring biblical history since being a graduate of Princeton Theological Seminary (MDiv) and on a personal basis with the practical wisdom of Alcoholics Anonymous (AA), the spiritual enlightenment of A Course in Miracles (ACIM) while discovering and sustaining my experiential faith.

While trying to verbalize their experiences with the Spirit, biblical authors used history, cultural fables or folklore, and other spiritual traditions to express themselves.

More and more people are drawn to spiritual Christianity with a longing for an unfiltered, personal relationship with the Spirit. These interests stem from a frustration with the rigid organizational structures, as well as the dogma and doctrines, of organized religions.

I believe the general categories of curiosity that open some Christians to practicing their faith as spiritual Christians are:

Oneness of Spirit and Oneness of Humankind

It’s not about rejecting religion traditions entirely, but an unsatisfied craving for Spirit that feels real and unmediated without “gatekeepers.” This is an initial step to personal growth and knowing one’s true Self, while building trust in one’s own experience of Spirit.

Inner Transformation

Traditional Christianity focuses generally on moral codes, doctrines and dogma, which relies on a literal interpretation of Scripture's translated words without defining the context of the text(s). Spiritual Christianity draws people together through sharing personal inner transformations and acknowledging “…it’s always an inside job.”

Exploring Mystical Experiences

Traditional Christian congregations often view mysticism with skepticism, associating it with the New Age fluff. However, Sunday services might offer temporary comfort but often lack the inner experiential awe that comes from feeling the Spirit's presence in a quiet forest or during a moment of deep stillness.

Exploring Mystical Experiences

The Bible talks about several mystical moments. Traditional settings are unlikely to inspire authentic mystical experiences as evidenced by recent studies showing declines in church attendance.

Lifestyle Changes

Spiritual Christianity is based on contemplative practices – silence and lectio divina (a meditative reading of Scripture). This turn to contemplative practices provides a slower, quieter way to engage in faith, which appeals to those who feel spiritually restless – generally noticing a gnawing feeling that “…there’s just something missing.”

Experiences Of Unity, Truth

Many Christians hunger for something more profound than routine religious observations. Traditional faith often gets tribal—my denomination, my theology, my baptism, my way. Many distance themselves from that. For most, the shift to spiritual Christianity is visceral: a growing reality of the power of experiential faith rather than an intellectual belief in doctrine or dogma. It is the reality of the ancient Mayan greeting – “I am but another you.”

How did the Bible become the Bible?

The source of Biblical texts was people of their times. Using incidents from their own personal experience the stories they tell are grounded in a down-to-earth manner of speaking.

My hope is that you will gain new insights from this and a fresh perspective on how the Bible came into existence. This is as the spiritual, albeit non-literal reference, journeys of people living in the time of Jesus.

The Bible Was Written By People

In its earliest stages, much of what would become the Bible existed as oral tradition—stories, laws, and teachings passed down through generations.
Benefits Of This Book

"… I have been re-reading your outstanding book, How the Bible Became the Bible, 2nd ed. Your writing is even more profound and informative upon my second reading than the first time I read it….  From this second reading of the book, I  could understand more fully how the development of the book grew out of your street ministry in Trenton, NJ.” "
~ Rev. R. Earle Rabb, The Jesus You Need to Know, 2021

"This website is a great tribute to Don's spiritual work. He is the real deal. He is as authentic in person as he is in his writing. His books and his on-going message have always been very helpful to me in my spiritual journey. Don is a mentor to many, so I'm excited he is getting an opportunity to share his wisdom with more people.” "
